CSUB Stuns No. 22 Stanford

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Redshirt sophomore Jarrod Snyder came through when the Roadrunners needed him most on Sunday.  With CSU Bakersfield clinging to a 17-10 lead over previously undefeated Stanford with just one bout remaining, Snyder took down Stanford's Haydn Maley in overtime to clinch the match for the `Runners and pick up CSUB's first win over a ranked opponent since they defeated Oregon State on February 7, 2016. 

Both Snyder and Maley escaped each other's grasp after starting on bottom in the second and third periods, respectively.  Snyder scored the match- and dual-winning takedown with just 29 seconds remaining to earn the sudden victory. 

"That's the biggest college win for Jarrod Snyder," said CSUB Head Coach Manny Rivera.  "He won the dual meet for the team and he's been in that position a few times this year.  I'm proud of him.  I know he's excited about it and I think the big thing for him to realize is this is just a start and he can go so much further."

The victory was also the first win over a ranked opponent in Rivera's tenure at CSUB and the first time the Roadrunners had beaten Stanford since Dec. 17, 2015.  Stanford would win the 125-pound bout to make the final score 20-13. 

"It's exciting to see guys start to fight harder for their teammates," said Rivera.  "I think we won this dual because guys stepped up and were wrestling more for the team than themselves.  It's good to focus out there, fight and things we've been preaching.  It's nice that they paid off against a ranked opponent."

It was redshirt senior Sean Nickell who set the tempo for the day with a dominant technical fall of Anthony Le at 133 pounds.  Nickell scored just a takedown in the first period before heating up with a takedown and a four-point nearfall in the second for a commanding 8-0 advantage.  He chose top at the start of the third period and needed just 41 seconds to record two more four-point nearfalls for five big team points. 

From there a couple of unheralded wrestlers took the lead as Carlos Herrera, Jacob Thalin and Bryan Battisto entered their matches under .500, but had their arms raised in triumph at the conclusion of seven minutes of wrestling on Sunday.

"Those guys did a great job today," said River.  "It was a good win for Jacob.  He's fought so hard.  It's good that we had some wins to show what we've been working on."

Herrera shutout Brandon Kier at 141 pounds via a big second period.  The redshirt junior escaped and took down Kier with 51 seconds remaining for 3-0 edge.  Herrera would ride him for the rest of the match after Kier chose bottom to start the third period. 

Thalin had one of the biggest upsets of the day at 165 pounds and started a string of three consecutive Roadrunner victories as he knocked off Dominick Mandarino, who was ranked 16th in the country at 157 pounds.  Thalin trailed 3-2 after the first period after both wrestlers scored a takedown and Mandarino added an escape, but the redshirt junior returned the favor in the second as he escaped and took down the Cardinal in the second.  Mandarino was only able to muster an escape in the third as Thallin was victorious 5-4. 

Battisto was victorious in two out of his three matches this weekend as he knocked off Rico Stormer at 174 pounds.  The redshirt senior had a huge first period with a takedown, a four-point nearfall and a penalty point for hands to the face.  It was a scoreless second period and Battisto was able to hold off a furious rally by Stormer to win 10-5. 

CSUB came through in the clutch again at 184 pounds.  Dominic Ducharme and Colbey Harland went into overtime and it was Ducharme who earned the winning takedown 25 seconds in sudden victory.  Both wrestlers were tied at 1-1 after they each escaped in the second and third periods. 

It was the Roadrunners first win over the Cardinal in the Icardo Center since Feb. 10, 2013. 

The `Runners will remain at home next Sunday as they look to make it two straight victories over ranked opponents at 6:00 p.m.  CSUB will entertain the Cowboys of Wyoming who are ranked 11th in the nation.
