CSUB Drops Pair of Tight Duals in Utah

OREM, Utah – Both of CSU Bakersfield's wrestling duals came down to the final match on Friday, but the Roadrunners were unable to come up with the deciding victory as they lost to West Virginia and Utah Valley by a combined nine points.

CSUB's Sean Nickell and Dominic Ducharme were the only Roadrunners to win both of their matches on Friday.  The 20th-ranked Nickell allowed just one point in two matches and earned a major decision, while Ducharme picked up a pin to start his day against WVU and a decision against Utah Valley.

Facing a 15-6 deficit after six matches, the Roadrunners stormed back to take a 16-15 lead after a win by major decision by Bryan Battisto and a pin by Dominic Ducharme.  Battisto had a huge first period and led 8-0 after a takedown, a four-point nearfall and another two-point nearfall just before the buzzer.  Battisto and James Wujek both scored two points in the second frame, but Battisto added another takedown and an escape after a Wujek reversal to earn the major decision.

Ducharme had no issues registering his fourth pin of the season to put CSUB on top.  He needed just 1:24 to subdue Jackson Moomau and score six huge points for the team.  It wouldn't be enough however, as the Mountaineers rallied to win the final two matches at 197 and 285, respectively.  Jarrod Snyder nearly won the dual for CSUB, but fell 2-1 to Brandon Ngati in the clincher.

Redshirt senior Sean Nickell posted an impressive 2-1 decision at the 133 pound match.  Nickell knocked off Matthew Schmitt who was ranked as high as No. 14 in the country.  It was the first time this season that Nickell has defeated a nationally-rated wrestler.  Nickell used an escape and a point for riding time to earn the victory.

Carlos Herrera showed no quit in the following match.  After a disastrous first period, the redshirt junior found himself trailing 12-0, but he wouldn't quit, scoring two nearfalls in the second period to cut Caleb Rea's lead in half.  In the final period, Herrera dominated with two four-point nearfalls and earned two points via penalty and another for riding time to post the 17-12 decision.

The Roadrunners' nearly knocked off the Wolverines, who are receiving votes in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association national rakings, but came up just short in their second dual of the day.

CSUB held an 11-6 advantage after the first five matches, but the Wolverines power lied in the bigger weights as three of their final five wrestlers are currently ranked in the top 20 nationally.  Sean Nickell put the `Runners up 4-3 after a dominating 11-0 major decision over Isaiah Delgado.  After a scoreless first period Nickell scored four points in the second via a reversal and a two-point nearfall.  In the third, he took down Delgado and had a four-point nearfall before picking up a point for riding time.

No. 16 Russell Rohlfing evened his record on the day in the 149-pound bout as he knocked off Landon Knutzen by a 9-3 score.  Rohlfing established the tempo early with a takedown just 1:12 into the match, but Knutzen rallied to tie the score at 2-2 at the end of the second period.  The redshirt junior finished with a flurry, scoring two takedowns and a two-point nearfall in the final 32 seconds.

Wyatt Gerl got into the act in the next match with an 11-3 major decision.  Gerl got started quickly with a takedown and two four-point nearfalls in the first period and scored a second period escape before hanging on for the bonus-point win.

In the 165-pound bout, Demetrius Romero, who is ranked ninth in the nation defeated Jacob Thalin 9-6.  Thalin put forth a strong effort and battled all the way to the finish, scoring a takedown with just 12 seconds left.  Earlier in the match, Carlos Herrera also battled hard against a national-ranked competitor, but fell 6-4 at 141 pounds.

Dominic Ducharme picked up the Roadrunners' final victory of the day in the 184-pound match.  Ducharme produced a takedown in each of the first two periods and earned points for an escape and riding time in the third period to earn the 6-4 decision.
