`Runners Come Up Just Short Against Bears

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield and Northern Colorado split 10 wrestling matches on Sunday afternoon inside the Icardo Center, but it was the Bears who claimed the 17-16 victory at the conclusion of the dual. 

After an opening technical fall by nationally-ranked Rico Montoya gave Northern Colorado an early 5-0 advantage, Sean Nickell cut into the lead with a dominating 5-0 victory over Sean Cannon at 133 pounds.  The first period was scoreless, but Nickell, who is ranked 20th in the nation, scored a second period takedown to claim a 2-0 advantage heading into the third frame.  The redshirt senior reversed Cannon's control in the third and added a point via riding time for the final score. 

The visitors made it 8-3 as Chris Sandoval defeated Carlos Herrera 7-3 in the 141-pound bout.  Russell Rohlfing answered with three team points of his own as he knocked off Armando Santillan 7-2 at 149.  With the score 0-0 after the first three minutes, Rohlfing used a takedown and after relinquishing control, escaped to take a 3-2 lead.  In the third, he escaped again, added another takedown and rode out Santillan for the final point. 

Jordan Robison defeated Wyatt Gerl at 157 pounds to increase the visiting team's lead to 11-6 at the intermission.  CSUB would seemingly take control of the dual with three consecutive victories after the 10 minute breather.  Jacob Thalin came through with the only bonus-point victory of the afternoon for CSUB, scoring a 16-4 decision over Macoy Flanagan.  Thalin led 4-0 after the first period, added three more points in the second and had three third-period takedowns for four team points. 

Bryan Battisto held off a late charge by Seth Bogulski to make it two straight victories for the home team as he defeated Seth Bogulski 6-5.  With Battisto holding a narrow 6-5 edge, Bogulski put in a great shot in the closing seconds, but Battisto held off the late charge as Bogulski was unable to get the winning takedown.  A third period escape proved to be the difference in the match as the score was 3-3 and 5-5 after the first and second periods, respectively.   

At 184 pounds it was perhaps CSUB's hottest wrestler that scored the 5-3 decision as the `Runners took a 16-11 lead on the scoreboard.  Dominic Ducharme didn't get taken down in the match and his first period takedown set the tempo.  The score was 2-2 after the second period, but Ducharme reversed control to start the third period and added a point for riding time for the victory. 

Mark Penyacsek nearly scored an impressive victory at 197 pounds against the nation's 16th-ranked wrestler, but it was Jacob Seely who escaped with a 6-4 victory.  The redshirt junior tied the match with 1:11 remaining, but Seely escaped and held off multiple shots by Penyacsek to earn the win.  In the heavyweight bout, Josh Loomer fought hard after being bumped up from his normal weight class at 197, but Robert Winters, Jr. earned the 9-4 victory. 

CSUB will be back in action on Friday when they travel to Orem, Utah.  The `Runners will grapple with West Virginia at 3:00 p.m. MT and will take on No. 23 Utah Valley at 5:00 p.m. MT.
