CSUB Dominates Sunbirds on Senior Day

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – On a beautiful afternoon at the John S. Hillman Memorial Aquatic Center, the CSU Bakersfield swimming and diving teams sent their seniors out in style.  The men's team dominated Fresno Pacific 208-85, while the women were equally as impressive with a 194-102 victory.

"It's great to end our dual meet season with two wins on Senior Day," said CSUB Director of Swimming Chris Hansen.  "I'd like to thank Jaren Hopkins, Owen van Krimpen, Justice Kramer, Shane Triplett, Jake Chir, Greg Lee, Nick Bustamante, Lexie Cannon, Darya Samiee, Tatum Collatz, Summer D'Arcy, Kiana Dorris, Sabrina Zavala and Suzie Westbrook for their hard work and dedication."

The women's team got off to a fast start, winning the first four events.  Tabea Mose, Jayssie Haynes, Autumn D'Arcy and Abigail Abshire got the Roadrunners off on the right foot with a victory by nearly three seconds in the 400-yard medley relay (3:53.68).  Zavala followed with the first of her two event wins of the day in the 1,000 free (10:30.01).  Haynes touched the wall first in the 200 freestyle (1:54.37) and Alyssa Madero added nine points to the team total with a 59.64 in the 100 backstroke.

After the women's string of wins was broken in the 100 breaststroke, Maddie Cosgrove got CSUB back on track with a victory in the 200 butterfly (2:06.67).  Autumn D'Arcy continued the run with a win in the 50 free (24.07) and Lauren Carson won the 1-meter diving event for the first time in her career and set a new career best in the process (214.65).  The `Runners made it four straight wins in the 100 free as Abshire, Alisa Cooke and Courtney Linton finished 1-2-3.

Zavala's second victory came in the 500 free (5:04.49), while Autumn D'Arcy also added wins in the 100 fly (55.14) and the 200 IM (2:07.29).  The foursome of Haynes, Cosgrove, Abshire and Cooke finished off the Sunbirds, winning the 200 free relay in the day's final event (1:38.04).

The men also came out of the blocks quickly, taking the first three events.  Kris Rogic, Chir, Kramer and Loren Gillilan teamed up to win the 400 medley relay (3:23.64), while Benji Duenas and Ryan Brimer contributed victories in the 1,000 free and 200 free, respectively.

Those four would continue to dominate the rest of the meet.  Chir added first-place finishes in the 100 breast (56.74) and 200 breast (2:05.24).  Rogic was victorious in the 200 back (1:53.53) and Kramer touched the wall first in the 200 IM (1:56.32).  Gillilan added a pair of wins in the 200 fly (1:49.13) and the 100 fly (47.85).  The sophomore set a personal best in both events and both times rank highly in the Western Athletic Conference standings.  His effort in the 100 ranks second and his time in the 200 checks in at sixth.

The `Runners were also successful in the diving events as Adam Estrella totaled a career-best 275.85 to win the 1-meter competition and Nate Cummins also set a career high in the 3-meter event (280.13) to earn his first victory of the season.

Later in the afternoon, Duenas won the 500 free (4:41.12) to sweep the distance events.  Kaden Miller also achieved his first win of the season as he won the 100 free in 45 seconds.  CSUB closed the day with a first-place finish in the 200 free relay as Linus Richter, Noah Hickman, Rogic and Gillilan swam an impressive 1:24.28.

The `Runners will have over a month off until their next competition.  They will head to Houston, Texas for the WAC Championships from February 27-March 2.
