Roadrunners Dominate Mustangs in SLO

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield wrestling team won seven of the 10 matches on Friday night at Cal Poly to defeat the Mustangs 24-11 and earn its first Pac-12 dual victory of the season.

"This was a great win for our program," said CSUB Head Coach Manny Rivera.  "It is always tough to win on the road against a conference opponent.  This is important momentum leading into our dual season."

After dropping the opening match at 197 pounds, Bakersfield native Jarrod Snyder got CSUB on the board with 5-1 decision at heavyweight.  With the score tied at 1-1 late in the third period, Snyder scored the winning takedown with two seconds remaining and added two near fall points as time expired for the win.

The Mustangs increased their lead to 7-3 with a hard-fought decision at 125 pounds, but it was nearly all `Runners from there.  Sean Nickell didn't relinquish a point in an 8-0 major decision over Yoshi Funakoshi to knot the score at 7-7.  Another local product, Carlos Herrera gave the visitors a lead they wouldn't relinquish, dominating Wyatt Cornelison by a 5-1 score at 141 pounds.  Herrera rode Cal Poly's Wyatt Cornelison for nearly six minutes to earn the decision.

Russell Rohlfing continued the run of `Runner victories with an easy 13-1 major decision over Tyler Schilling at 149 pounds.  Rohlfing led just 4-0 as they entered the final period, but he used a pair of takedowns, a four-point near fall and a point for riding time to secure the major decision.

After a major decision by Cal Poly cut the CSUB lead to 14-11, the visitors won the final three matches to win the dual.  Jacob Thalin had a trio of takedowns in his 9-3 victory at 165 pounds over Dylan Miracle and at 174 pounds Bryan Battisto clinched the dual with an impressive 11-3 major decision over Nathan Tausch.  Battisto produced a takedown in every period and finished strong with two in the final two minutes to secure the bonus point.

In the final match of the evening, Dominic Ducharme had no problems at 184 pounds, earning an 8-2 decision over Willem DeBoer.  Ducharme also finished his match strong with a pair of third-period takedowns.

CSUB (4-4, 1-1 Pac-12) is back at the Icardo Center next Sunday when they host Northern Colorado at 2:00 p.m.
