Watkins, Mills Finish Strong For CSUB Golf

NEBRASKA CITY, Neb. – The final round of the UNO Invitational featured five more strokes of improvement for CSU Bakersfield's women's golf team on Saturday. The Roadrunners posted their best single-round score of the season behind identical scores of 75 from a pair of juniors: Macey Mills and Vanessa Watkins.

"I'm really happy with Vanessa's round today," said Meghan Thomason, CSUB's Director of Golf. "She definitely proved that she's ready to contribute to this team on a regular basis. I'm so proud of Macey's tournament overall. She played three very solid rounds in tough conditions. She's going to do some special things this year."

Thomason went on to talk about her team's overall performance: "I think the team learned a lot this week. We have about three and a half weeks to get ready for our next tournament and I'm glad we have some time to really assess what was good about our game and what needs some work."

Watkins and Mills posted identical scores on both the front and back nine holes in Saturday's final round, but took different routes to the same score. During their two-over-par front nine, Mills posted seven pars and a pair of bogeys. Watkins birdied three holes, but wound up at two-over as well.

The final nine holes of the tournament fared similarly for Bakersfield's two leaders. Watkins bogeyed Nos. 11 and 13, but carded her fourth birdie of the round on No. 16 to finish with a season-best 75 (+3). Mills picked up her one birdie of the round on a par-3 No. 11 before a pair of bogeys finished her day at 75 as well.

Freshman Juliana Gomez wrapped up the UNO Invite with her best round as well. The native of Upland, Calif. posted a score of 82 with a pair of birdies on her card. Redshirt senior Sara Scheidt rounded out CSUB's scoring four with a 90 while Jenni Chun withdrew from the final round of competition.

The `Runners concluded Round 3 with a tournament-best score of 322 (+34), five strokes lower than the team's best round from Day 1. Bakersfield wrapped up the competition in ninth place of nine teams, just eight strokes behind host Omaha.

Individually, Mills' trio of 70s helped the Bakersfield native placed fifth overall in the 59-woman field with a three-round total of 227 (+11). The total ranks Mills 10th all-time in CSUB's history for 54-hole tournament score.

Watkins' final round propelled the junior to finish second for the `Runners and 42nd overall at 249. Gomez's three-round score was just one stroke and one place behind Watkins while Scheidt wound up 56th at 259.

The `Runners have wrapped up their first tournament of the season and will return to Bakersfield for almost a month to prepare for the next competition. On the final two days of September, CSUB will tackle the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate in Palm Desert, Calif.
