`Runners Drop a Nail Biter to New Mexico

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield beach volleyball team lost 3-2 in a tight battle to the University of New Mexico on Friday at the Barnes Beach Volleyball Complex at the Student Rec Center.

The Roadrunners (3-11) split the first two matches of the day to the Lobos (6-10). Sydney Haynes and Emily Hansen tied the score at 2-2 in comeback fashion at the top spot. The tandem dropped the first set 23-21, but evened the score with a dominating 21-8 victory. Haynes and Hansen finished off the Lobos in the finals set, 15-12.

With just the No. 3 match remaining, Aleksandra Djordjevic and Briannah Mariner rallied for a 23-21 second set victory after dropping the first set 21-11. CSUB led for long portions of the third and final set, but were unable to complete the comeback and fell 17-15 in the final frame.

Mattison DeGarmo and Emily Lopes got their fifth win of the season and first of the year at the No. 4 position to get the `Runners on the board. The tandem dropped the first set 21-16, but battled back and won 21-16, 15-12 to take the match.

Desiree Sukhov and Sarah Garrow also performed well for CSUB, but were bested at the No. 2 position 17-21, 21-16, 15-10.

The `Runners are back in action tomorrow when they host Sacramento State at 10:00 a.m. and Cal State LA at 2:00 p.m.
