Beach Volleyball to Host Three Matches Over the Weekend

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield beach volleyball team is set to host the University of New Mexico, Sacramento State and Cal State LA this weekend at the Barnes Beach Volleyball Complex at the Student Rec Center.

CSUB (3-10) is coming off a tough weekend at the Big West Challenge as they dropped all five matches, three of which came to opponents that were ranked in the top ten in the country.  Sarah Garrow and Desiree Sukhov were the Roadrunners' most successful pairing as they won matches against Sacramento State and CSUN at the No. 2 position.

"We have a good opportunity to get back on track this week with these home matches," said head coach Cesar Benatti.  The new game added last week vs. New Mexico and the games on Saturday can give us the confidence to grow for the rest of the season."

On Friday, the Roadrunners (3-10) will host New Mexico (5-10) for an afternoon matinee at 1:30 p.m.  The Lobos went 3-1 on their most recent home stand, defeating Colorado Mesa University and Abilene Christian University twice.  Eastyn Baleto and Lauren Twitty have been New Mexico's top pair and have gone 8-4 so far this season, winning matches at No. 1, 2 and 3 positions.  Maddie Irwin and Erin Martin have also been a solid pair atop the Lobo lineup, going 6-6 at the top spot and 8-7 overall.

The `Runners are looking to exact some revenge on the Hornets (1-12) in Saturday's opener.  Last Friday, CSUB lost a hard-fought match to Sacramento State, 3-2.  Emily Hansen and Sydney Haynes were victorious at the top spot (21-13, 21-17) and Garrow and Sukhov earned a comeback victory (19-21, 21-15, 15-12) at No. 2.  The match was evenly contested as three of the five matches went the full three sets.

CSUB beat Cal State LA (2-6) twice last season and hopes to continue their recent success against the Golden Eagles.  Cal State LA hasn't played since they were shutout by Stanford University and Long Beach State on March 27.

"We continue to grow in practice and even last week was a good experience to give us the tools for the next matches," said Benatti.  "We are looking forward to this weekend."

Friday's match is set for 1:30 p.m. First serve on Saturday against Sacramento State is set for 10:00 a.m. on Saturday and the day will conclude at 2:00 p.m. against Cal State LA.
