CSUB Advances to Final Day of Big West Tournament

HONOLULU, Hawaii – In the opening match of the 2018 Big West Conference Tournament, the CSU Bakersfield beach volleyball team beat CSUN 3-2 for the first time in five tries this season.  The Roadrunners fell to the University of Hawaii in the second round 5-0 before bouncing back and knocking off Sacramento State 3-2 to advance to Saturday. 

"Today was our best day of the year," said head coach Cesar Benatti.  "The girls left their hearts on the courts and I couldn't be happier for them.  They worked so hard for the entire season and these wins were a big reward for us.  Moving on to the second day, especially pulling off a win against a team that we lost previous matches to means a lot to our program."

The Matadors got the better of the `Runners all four times the two teams played in the regular season, but the tables were turned in postseason play.  CSUB got two-set victories at the No. 2, 3 and 4 positions to knock off fourth-seeded CSUN.  The fifth-seeded `Runners got victories from Desiree Sukhov and Sarah Garrow at No. 2 (23-21, 21-15) Aleksandra Djordjevic and Briannah Mariner at No. 3 (21-10, 21-15) and Mattison DeGarmo and Emily Lopes at No. 4 (21-14, 21-17).

Hawaii 5, CSUB 0
CSUB had a tough second match of the day against the home SandBows.  Hawaii was the top seed in the tournament, is ranked third nationally and is on a 28-match winning streak.  The `Runners didn't win a set in the match, but fought hard.  After no team scored more than 11 points in the first set, all five pairs scored at least 13 in the second set.

The `Runners had to dig deep to advance to Saturday.  Playing in their third match of the day and trailing 1-0 in four of the five matches, CSUB mounted an impressive comeback victory.  Aleksandra Djordjevic and Briannah Mariner got CSUB on the scoreboard with a 22-20, 21-15 straight set victory, and the `Runners pulled ahead when Desiree Sukhov and Sarah Garrow scored a 15-21, 21-14, 15-11 comeback.  Emily Hansen and Sydney Haynes won their second set 21-13 and dominated the final set 15-8 to clinch the match.

"Tomorrow we have another tough battle and we will get on the court with the same intensity we had today and have fun at this gorgeous place," said Benatti. 
 
CSUB (8-17) now has eight victories on the season, which is tied for second in school history.  Degarmo and Lopes picked up their 11th victory of the season on Friday, which ties them for 10th in single-season CSUB history. 
 
Just four of the six teams remain in the tournament and all but CSUB is nationally ranked.  The `Runners will face second-seeded Cal Poly tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. HT/2:00 p.m. PT.  The Mustangs are ranked No. 4 in the country.
