CSUB Earns No. 5 Seed in Big West Tournament

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield beach volleyball team has earned the No. 5 seed in this weekend's Big West Conference Tournament in Honolulu, Hawaii.  The Roadrunners will square off against No. 4 CSUN in the opening round on Friday.

CSUB (6-16) and CSUN (17-6) will be meeting for the fifth time this season in the opening round.  The Matadors have won all four matches so far this season, but three of them have been by 3-2 scores.  CSUN narrowly defeated the `Runners on April 21 at the Barnes Beach Volleyball Complex at the Student Rec Center.  Aleksandra Djordjevic and Briannah Mariner earned a 15-21, 21-15, 15-12 comeback victory at the No. 2 pairing and Mattison DeGarmo and Emily Lopes scored a 21-16, 21-19 win at No. 3.  The Roadrunners looked like they would take the match as Emily Hansen and Sydney Haynes earned a 21-17 opening-set win at the top spot in the lineup, but the Matadors responded with 21-19 and 15-10 set victories.

The Roadrunners against CSUN are 0-4 at the top pair, 3-1 at No. 2, 2-2 at No. 3, 1-3 at No. 4 and 1-3 and No. 5.  The two teams will open the six-team tournament at 10:00 a.m. HT on Friday.  If CSUB springs the upset, they will take on top-seeded and No. 3 nationally-ranked University of Hawaii at 12:00 p.m. HT Friday.

The Big West Conference will also hold a 16-team single elimination pairs tournament on Sunday.  CSUB's Haynes and Hansen have been seeded 11th, while Desiree Sukhov and Sarah Garrow were seeded 15th

Sukhov and Garrow will meet No. 2 seed and top pair from No. 4 nationally-ranked Cal Poly, Torrey Van Winden and Tiadora Miric.  Sukhov and Garrow have played exclusively at the No. 2 spot in the order, while Van Winden and Miric are 17-6 this season at the top spot in the lineup.  Match time is set for 10:00 a.m. HT.

Haynes and Hansen (7-15) will square off with No. 6 seed Megan Krudihof and Rachel Nieto of Long Beach State (6-1).  Haynes and Hansen have been CSUB's top pair all season long, while Nieto and Krudihof have played just seven matches together, all at the No. 2 position.  Nieto played most of the season at the top position, while Krudihof has played almost entirely at No. 2.  Match time is set for 11:00 a.m. HT.
