Mills Leads CSUB On Day 2 Of WAC Tournament

PHOENIX, Ariz. – While most of the field at the Western Athletic Conference Tournament slowed down on Day 2, sophomore Macey Mills improved  to lead the CSU Bakersfield women's golf team into the clubhouse. Behind Mills' three-over-par 74, the Roadrunners maintained a one-stroke lead on UTRGV for sixth-place and are within striking distance for their second-straight Top 5 finish.

Outside of Mills, the rest of the `Runners, like most of the field, struggled to keep pace with their Day 1 performances. CSUB's Director of Golf Meghan Thomason helped her team focus on the finish after Day 2: "We're going to go out and have fun tomorrow. That's the plan. Macey showed a lot of resilience today and posted a good score when we really needed it."

Mills, a Bakersfield, Calif. native, dropped her score by three strokes from Round 1 to Round 2 to pace the `Runners. The sophomore parred 14 holes and added a birdie on 11 to finish at three-over-par. Senior Ariel Lee needed two more strokes on Tuesday than in her first round, but finished the day with a solid 76.

Sara Scheidt's 80 (+9) was CSUB's third-best score of the day while Tori Peers and Julia Stewart both carded 82s in Round 2. CSUB's four-woman score totaled 312 strokes on Tuesday, 10 more than the day prior.

After the first 36 holes of competition, Lee still paces the `Runners with 150 strokes (+8), but is trailed closely behind by Mills' 151. Lee is on the cusp of finishing in the Top 20 while Mills is within reach as well at 22nd.

Scheidt, a redshirt junior, is sitting on 156 strokes after the first two days. Peers is one stroke back while Stewart rounds out the group with a two-day total of 160.

???????CSUB's 36-hole score is 614 strokes, which keeps the `Runners one stroke ahead of UTRGV. Bakersfield is sitting in sixth place, but has a chance to chase down Missouri-Kansas City (604) to earn its second fifth-place finish in the last two years.

The `Runners and the rest of the WAC will return to Legacy Golf Resort on Wednesday for one final round of golf. CSUB will once again tee off at 8:10 a.m. (PT) with a live feed from the first tees shown on the WAC's Facebook page.
