All 5 `Runners Shoot In 70s To Start WAC Tourney

PHOENIX, Ariz. – A sprint out of the gate followed by a steady round helped CSU Bakersfield's women's golf team post its second-best 18-hole score at the Western Athletic Conference Tournament in school history on Monday. CSUB opened with a round of 302 (+18) on the Par 71 course at Legacy Golf Resort as all five Roadrunners shot in the 70s to kick off the week.

"Overall the round was a solid effort from everyone," said Meghan Thomason, CSUB's Director of Golf. "I think each player would like to have one or two swings back and that's the difference between an okay score and a great score. We'll go out tomorrow and stay focused on taking it one shot at a time."

Senior Ariel Lee once again paced the `Runners with her round of 74 (+3). The native of Singapore started slowly, posting bogeys on each of the first three holes, but used a pair of birdies to even out her score for the rest of the day. Lee finished Round 1 of the WAC Tourney tied for 17th out of 40 individuals and sits just one stroke outside of the Top 10.

The rest of the `Runners came into the clubhouse in one-stroke succession behind Lee with fellow senior Tori Peers carding a 75 on Monday. A Grand Island, Neb. native, Peers was at one-under-par through 14 holes, but stumbled on 16 and 17 to finish at four-over. The senior has been one of CSUB's most consistent golfers of all time and stands a solid chance to shoot low on Tuesday.

Redshirt junior Sara Scheidt started out strong with a birdie on the first hole and finished the front nine at even par to lead the `Runners to that point. Scheidt, who hails from Clovis, Calif., posted a score of 76 to wrap up the day third for the `Runners.

Sophomore Macey Mills and senior Julia Stewart each carded one birdie on their ways to scores of 77 and 78, respectively. Mill's six-over rounded out CSUB's scoring four with 302 strokes (+18), which ranks the `Runners in CSUB's Top 10 all-time for 18-hole scores.

Bakersfield sits in sixth place of eight teams after the first day of competition, but there is plenty of room for movement on the leaderboard. After the first 18 holes, CSUB trails a pair of teams tied for third by just 12 strokes, second-place Seattle U by 15 strokes, and WAC-leader Grand Canyon by just 17 strokes.

Round 2 of the WAC Tournament will kick off at 7:30 a.m. (PT) in Phoenix, but the `Runners will not start teeing off until 8:10. The WAC will once again stream tee offs from the first hole on Facebook Live.
