GOODYEAR, Ariz. – CSU Bakersfield's women's golf team posted four scores in the 70s on Tuesday to wrap up the Bobcat Spring Invitational with its best round of the tournament. Senior Ariel Lee led the way as the Roadrunners posted Top 10 all-time results in three different categories.
"It was not our best, overall, but we showed a lot of improvement and fight today," said Meghan Thomason, Director of Golf at CSUB. "Ariel and Julia really came through for the team. We just need to keep the big numbers off our cards and we'll be in good shape at conference."
As she did all week, Lee paced the `Runners with a final-round score of 75 (+3). The native of Singapore tied fellow senior Julia Stewart, whose 75 was her second-best round of the season. Senior Tori Peers came into the clubhouse with a 78 on Tuesday while redshirt junior Sara Scheidt rounded out the CSUB scoring four with her 79.
As a team, CSUB wrapped up the Invite with its best round of the tournament, a 19-over-par 307. That mark is the ninth-best 18-hole team score in CSUB's history. Sophomore Macey Mills' 82 did not count towards the team score on Tuesday while Deedra Dollesin, playing as an individual, finished the tournament with an 81.
For the week, Lee led the `Runners with a final score of 224 (72-77-75, +8), which tied her for 15th overall in the 86-woman field. The tournament score is also tied for fifth-best all-time for the `Runners and Lee has only shot better once in her historic career.
Peers wrapped up the tournament second for CSUB and 47th overall with a 54-hole score of 236 (80-78-78, +20). Dollesin shot consistently to finish at 241 (82-78-81, +25), while Stewart's strong finish helped her wrap up with 242 strokes (84-83-75, +26).
Scheidt's final two rounds were in the 70s as the native of Clovis, Calif. finished the tournament 27-over-par (86-78-79-243). Mills, who hails from Bakersfield, Calif., was consistently in the low 80s all weekend and came in one stroke behind Scheidt (81-81-82-244, +28).
As a team, CSUB wrapped up the week with a team total of 938 strokes (317-314-307, +74), another Top 10 mark for the `Runners. The score was good enough for 11th overall among 16 teams. CSUB was able to hold off fellow Western Athletic Conference member UTRGV, besting the Vaqueros by 10 strokes.
The `Runners have wrapped up the regular season and will return to Arizona next week to take on the WAC Tournament. The 2018 league championship will be played Apr. 16-18 with 18 holes of golf each day in Phoenix.
