Beach Volleyball Opens Home Schedule Saturday

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield beach volleyball team will be making its home debut on Saturday  at the Barnes Beach Volleyball Complex at the Student Rec Center when it hosts MiraCosta College and Vanguard University.

Last weekend, the Roadrunners (1-3, 0-2 BW) ran into some tough competition in Northridge as they were defeated by CSUN, 4-1, and by No. 7 Long Beach State, 5-0.  No. 3 pair Mattison DeGarmo and Emily Lopes earned the lone victory for Bakersfield against CSUN as they won in straight sets by identical 21-19 scores.  Hannah Manzanares and Aleksandra Djordjevi played well at the No. 5 spot, but fell in three sets (21-15, 17-21, 15-13) to the Matadors.

MiraCosta (3-1) is off to a solid start to the season and they have won two in a row as they travel to Bakersfield.  In Carlsbad last weekend, the Spartans defeated Concordia 3-2 and swept Hope International, 5-0.  Last season, MiraCosta went 23-2 and won the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) state title.

The Lions of Vanguard (0-5) are the only team CSUB has defeated on the young season.  The `Runners swept Vanguard at Huntington Beach, winning all of the matches in straight sets.  Vanguard is still searching for its victory of the season.

The `Runners will start the day against MiraCosta at 10:00 a.m. and will take on Vanguard at 2:00 p.m.
