CSUB Completes First Day of Big West Challenge

FOLSOM, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield beach volleyball showed some improvement, but lost matches to No. 3 University of Hawai'I, Sacramento State and CSUN on Friday on the first day of the Big West Challenge.

The Roadrunners (3-8) ran up against one of the top teams in the country in their first match of the day.  With the victory, Hawaii won their 14th-consecutive match.

4. Ozee/Homayun (UH) def. Mariner/Djordjevic (CSUB) 21-15, 21-12
5. Zalopany/Dreeuws (UH) def. Barber/Hernandez (CSUB) 21-10, 21-12
 
Sacramento State 3, CSU Bakersfield 2
In the second match of the day, CSUB lost a heartbreaker to Sacramento State, 3-2.  Emily Hansen and Sydney Haynes made quick work of the Hornets at the top spot in the lineup, winning in straight sets, 21-13, 21-17.  Four of the other five matches went the full three sets, with Sarah Garrow and Desiree Sukhov coming from behind to win 19-21, 21-15, 15-12 at the second pair. 

Briannah Mariner and Aleksandra Djordjevic lost their first set 24-22 before battling back for a 21-19 victory in the second.  Unfortunately, they couldn't complete the comeback and fell 15-11 in the final frame.  Krista Hernandez and Ally Barber started off strong with a 21-17 first set win, but ran out of steam and dropped the final two sets.

The `Runners nearly avenged an early season loss to the Matadors, but came up just short in the final match of the day.  Desiree Sukhov and Sarah Garrow won their second match of the day at No. 2 spot by downing CSUN, 21-11, and 21-15.  Ally Barber and Krista Hernandez were also victories at the No. 5 spot.  The duo won by identical 21-16 set scores.  Mattison DeGarmo and Emily Lopes nearly clinched the match for CSUB but were defeated (118-21, 21-15, 15-10) in a three-set thriller.

CSUB will be back in Folsom tomorrow as they take on No. 5 Long Beach State at 12:00 p.m. and No. 6 Cal Poly at 3:00 p.m. to complete the Big West Challenge.
