Beach Volleyball to Host Pair of Nationally-Ranked Opponents

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield beach volleyball team returns home to the Barnes Beach Volleyball Complex at the Student Rec Center on Saturday to square off against a pair of nationally-ranked teams.  The Roadrunners will play No. 7 Cal Poly to start the day and will finish against No. 15 Loyola Marymount University.

The Roadrunners (3-3) haven't lost since March 4 against Long Beach State and have beaten Missouri State University and Vanguard University.  CSUB has also knocked off junior colleges MiraCosta College and Irvine Valley College.

Last Time Out
CSUB had to battle to earn their latest victory against Missouri State.  Three of the five matches went three sets, two of which were won by the `Runners.  Sarah Garrow and Desiree Sukhov were victorious at No. 2 (21-11, 18-21, 15-11) and Emily Lopes and Mattison DeGarmo claimed a 26-24, 15-21, 15-10 victory at No. 3.  Aleksandra Djordjevic and Briannah Mariner aided the effort with a 21-19, 21-11 win at No. 5.

Degarmo and Lopes have been CSUB's most successful pair so far this year and enter the weekend with a 4-2 mark.  Emily Hansen and Sydney Haynes have a pair of victories at the No. 1 spot, while Hannah Manzanares and Sidney Wicks and Sarah Garrow and Desiree Sukhov also have a pair of wins.

Looking Ahead
"We are super excited to host two great teams this weekend," said CSUB head coach Cesar Benatti.  It's a great opportunity to compete with them and try to bring out game to the next level.  Practices have been pretty good, even with the heavy rain that is hitting Bakersfield this week.  We look forward to a great weekend."

Scouting the Lions
The Lions (7-6) shut out the `Runners to start the season, so hopefully CSUB can show some improvement against one of the nation's best.  On St. Patrick's Day, Loyola Marymount swept Colorado Mesa University and Missouri State before getting shutout by No. 2 UCLA.

Scouting the Mustangs
Cal Poly (12-2) comes to Bakersfield on a nine-match winning streak.  The Mustangs have already scored victories against No. 11 University of Arizona, No. 1 Pepperdine University and No. 12 Grand Canyon University.  Samantha Manley and Emily Sonny are the Mustangs' top pair as they have put together a 14-0 record.  Taylor Nelson and Adlee Van Winden also have a spotless 8-0 record.

The day will get underway at 10:00 a.m. when the Roadrunners take on Cal Poly.  The Mustangs and the Lions will then meeting in a neutral site match at 12:00 p.m. and the day will conclude with CSUB playing Loyola Marymount.
