`Runners Continue Hot Streak in Irvine

IRVINE, Calif. – The CSU beach volleyball stayed hot on Friday as they knocked off Missouri State University and Irvine Valley College.

The Roadrunners (3-3) squeaked by the Bears in the opener, 3-2. Desiree Sukhov and Sarah Garrow evened their season record to 2-2 with a three-set victory at the No. 2 position (21-17, 11-21, 15-11). At No. 3 pair, Mattison DeGarmo and Emily Lopes increased their record to 4-2, with a three-set thriller (25-23, 15-21, 15-11). Aleksandra Djordjevic and Briannah Mariner finished off Missouri State with a 21-19, 21-11 victory at No. 5.

"We had a great day where we faced great teams," said head coach Cesar Benatti. "We managed to put our strategy and game plan in place and made good adjustments to their game plan. We will work on the things that did not work as well and keep growing as we play two really good teams next week."

It was nearly a clean sweep against the Lasers of Irvine Valley as CSUB scored a 4-1 victory. Sydney Haynes and Emily Hansen scored and an easy 21-15, 21-11 win at the top spot, and Sukhov and Garrow earned another three-set victory at the second spot (21-13, 15-21, 15-12).

Degarmo and Lopes matched Sukhov and Garrow with their second win of the day at the No. 3 pair (18-21, 21-8, 15-11), while Sidney Wicks and Hannah Manzanares got in to the act with a dominant 21-11, 21-13 win at No. 5.

Next Saturday, the `Runners will host a pair of nationally-ranked opponents. CSUB will play No. 6 Cal Poly at 10:00 a.m. and finish the day against No. 16 Loyola Marymount University.
