ST. GEORGE, Utah – A pair of CSU Bakersfield records were either tied or broken on Friday as the Roadrunner women's golf team wrapped up the Pizza Hut Lady Thunderbird Invitational. Sophomore Macey Mills led the `Runners for the second-straight day to tie the school record for a 36-hole tournament while Bakersfield reset its previous team record as well.
CSUB's Director of Golf, Meghan Thomason, has high expectations for her squad that has been excelling all season long: "I felt like a Top 3 finish was within reach after yesterday's round, but we didn't get it done today. Things need to turn around quickly as we head to Sacramento on Sunday."
After pacing CSUB with a first-round 76, Mills lowered her score to a one-over-par 73 to close out the tournament on Friday. The Bakersfield, Calif. native's Round 2 score was just one over her 18-hole personal best, finish tied for sixth overall among 71 student-athletes, and tied the school record for a 36-hole tournament score with 149 strokes (+5).
Two other `Runners scored in the 70s to finish Southern Utah's tournament with senior Ariel Lee posting a 77 and redshirt junior Sara Scheidt carding a 79. Senior Tori Peers' 80 rounded out the CSUB scoring four on Friday while senior Julia Stewart was just one stroke back.
As a four-woman team, the `Runners wrapped up the Invite with a 36-hole score of 622 strokes, breaking the previous school record from the same tournament by two strokes (2015-16, 624). The total placed CSUB eighth of 11 teams as Wyoming won the team title with 598 strokes.
At the conclusion of a busy week of golf, the `Runners have competed in five rounds of golf and will get right back to work. CSUB will kick off the Sacramento State Invitational on Monday, Mar. 20, with two days of competition scheduled at Sierra View Country Club.
