Beach Volleyball Opens Home Schedule in Style

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield beach volleyball team defeated MiraCosta College and swept Vanguard University to open its 2018 home schedule at the Barnes Beach Volleyball Complex at the Student Rec Center.

The Roadrunners (2-3) dominated the competition on Saturday and dropped just one out of one of the 10 matches. Sydney Haynes and Emily Hansen needed a comeback at the top spot against Vanguard, but got the job done with 21-15 and 15-5 set victories. At the No. 5 pair, Ally Barber and Krista Hernandez made quick work of the Lions and won 21-9, 21-6. Sidney Wicks and Hannah Manzanares also won in straight sets (21-9, 21-10) at the No. 4 spot.

Mattison Degramo and Emily Lopes squeaked by the first set, 24-22 and rolled to a 21-15 second set victory as the No. 4 pair. Desiree Sukhov and Sarah Garrow played at No. 2 and earned a 21-13, 21-7 victory over the Lions.

Against MiraCosta College, one of the top junior college programs in the state of California, the `Runners won 4-1.

"Today was very good for us," said `Runner head coach Cesar Benatti. "We overcame the difficulties we had throughout the matches and made good changes that helped us win the matches. They have good players that made us play our best. It was a nice way to start our home matches."

The `Runners will head to Irvine, Calif. on Friday to take on Missouri State University and Irvine Valley College. First serve is slated for 2:00 p.m.
