CSUB Wraps Up 36 Holes Of Golf In Pheonix

PHOENIX, Ariz. – The CSU Bakersfield women's golf team, coming off its historic tournament at the Battle at the Rock, traveled to Arizona for the 54-hole, two-day Grand Canyon Invitational.

The Roadrunners opened the tournament with a round of 307 (+19) to sit in eighth place in the 15-team tournament. In the second round, CSUB needed six more strokes on the way to a four-woman score of 313. On the day, the `Runners wound up tied for seventh place with a 36-hole total of 620 strokes (+44).

"Today was a bit of a struggle, especially the second round," said Meghan Thomason, Head Coach of the `Runners. "I think we were expecting it to come easy like it did during our last tournament and that wasn't the case. We posted a few good scores but we need four to be competitive, especially in this field. I'm confident we will bounce back tomorrow."

Round 1

Senior Tori Peers led the way for CSUB with a 73 (+1) and would be tied for sixth after 18 holes. Peers had three birdies and four bogeys in her opening round.

Senior Ariel Lee shot 76 (+4) with two birdies and six bogeys, but did avoid the big number, no double bogeys or worse.

Sophomore Macey Mills, just like Lee, had no double bogeys or worse and would shoot 78 (+6) with one birdie and seven bogeys.

Sophomore Misha Vega, who stole the show at the Battle at the Rock, opened the tournament with one birdie and shoot an 80 (+8).

Sara Scheidt would shoot an opening round 81 (+9) and did have a birdie, but the triple bogey on the ninth hole would keep the junior from shooting in the 70's.

Round 2

The second round saw Mills improve three strokes from her first round for a score of 75 to lead all `Runners. She finished the day third for the `Runners with 153 (+9) strokes and was tied with Lee for 23rd overall. Lee used one more stroke for a round of 77 to close the day.

Peers needed five more strokes for Round 2, posting a 78 but remaining CSUB's Day 1 leader with a two-round total of 151 strokes (+7). The senior is tied for 11th overall after the first 36 holes.

Vega shot a second-round 83 while Scheidt came into the clubhouse with an 86 to end the first day of competition.

The `Runners will return to the GCU Golf Course on Sunday for one final round.
