Bakersfield At WAC Cross Country Championships Saturday

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Western Athletic Conference announced it women's cross country pre-championship coaches poll, as voted by the nine head coaches in the league, with the Roadrunners picked to finish eighth. The 2018 WAC Cross Country Championships are this Saturday, Oct. 27 at Jefferson Park Golf Course in Seattle. The women's 6k race is set to begin at 10 a.m.

This is the first time the WAC Championships distance will be 6000m – the same as the NCAA Championships. The change was voted on by conference head coaches in the offseason to help with consistency.

"We're looking for some good individual performances this weekend," said Director of Cross Country, Marcia Mansur-Wentworth. "I don't think the change from 5000m to 6000m will make a difference in the outcome of the race."

With Alejandra Frausto out with a fractured foot, Paradise Pelzer and Bianca Frausto are expected to lead the way for Bakersfield this weekend. The junior duo finished one-two, respectively, two weeks ago at the UC Riverside Highlander Invitational.

A trio of freshmen will round out the scoring five for CSUB. Yuviana Torres, Alea Gaona and Virginia Lopez will be given the opportunity to see what a college championship looks like this weekend in hopes that it helps develop them and facilitates strong performances in the future.

"With the injuries we've sustained this season and losing some key impact runners this year has served as a rebuilding year for the team while letting some of the younger runners get some valuable championship experience," added Mansur-Wentworth.
