`Runners Tie CSUB 18-Hole Record On Final Day In Utah

SPRINGVILLE, Utah – The Roadrunner women's golf team wrapped up the Hobble Creek Fall Classic with continued improvement as CSU Bakersfield lowered its score another 11 strokes in the third and final round. CSUB used a team total of 299 (+15) strokes on Tuesday, tying the school's 18-hole record.

"I'm really happy with the way the team bounced back from the start we had yesterday," said Meghan Thomason, CSUB's Director of Golf. "Our team score today is what I expect on a regular basis this year. Every time I raise the bar, this group busts through it. We are leaving Utah with a lot of confidence and really good plan for improvement over the next few weeks."

All five `Runners scored in the 70s on Tuesday with senior Tori Peers leading the way with a third-round 74 (+3). Fellow senior Ariel Lee, redshirt junior Sara Scheidt, and sophomore Macey Mills all posted scores of 75 to round out the CSUB scoring four. Senior Julia Stewart also improved from her first two rounds and scored a tournament-low 78.

Peers, a native of Grand Island, Neb., paced the `Runners on the tournament with a three-round total of 227 strokes (+14). The senior tied for fifth-best 54-hole individual score in CSUB history and 27th overall in Utah. Lee, a native of Singapore, came in three strokes back at 230 to finish tied for 32nd.

Stewart, a graduate of Bakersfield Christian High School, finished third for the `Runners with a 54-hole score of 237. Making her CSUB debut, Scheidt carded a 242 on the week while Mills, another Bakersfield native, was one stroke behind.

As a team, CSUB's 299 tied the school record for a single round, set just one year ago. The `Runners combined for a three-round total of 933 (+81), which is fourth-best in CSUB's history. With improved scores each round, the `Runners finished 12th of 12 teams, but a mere two strokes behind 11th-place North Dakota.

New Mexico State won the team title with a three-round total of 866 strokes while the Aggies' Suthavee Chanachai won the individual title a score of 204.

With the season opener under their belts, the `Runners will return to Bakersfield and prepare for their next tournament. CSUB will head to Wyoming's Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate, Sept. 30 – Oct. 1, in Palm Desert, Calif.
