Peers Paces `Runners To Open Season In Utah

SPRINGVILLE, Utah – CSU Bakersfield's women's golf team opened the 2017-18 season with 36 holes at the Hobble Creek Fall Classic hosted by Utah Valley. Senior Tori Peers continued to be a leader for the Roadrunners, pacing CSUB in each of the first two rounds of competition.

"I think the first round was one of those rounds where you just shrug your shoulders and put it behind you," said Meghan Thomason, CSUB's Director of Golf. "They played better in the second round, but we have a lot of work to do to get them where they should be consistently."

Thomason went on to talk about the difficulties the team faced in the season opener: "I personally felt frustrated by our poor start because it set the tone for the whole first round. A few of the girls were able to recognize their problems and make some key adjustments at the end of the first round and into the beginning of the second."

Round 1

The `Runners started out slowly, finishing 12th of 12 teams in the first round of UVU's tournament. As a four-woman squad, CSUB posted a score of 324 (+40) on the Par 71 course with Peers leading the way with a first-round 78 (+7).

Fellow seniors Ariel Lee (79) and Julia Stewart (80) came in behind Peers in one-stroke succession. Redshirt junior Sara Scheidt, playing her first competitive round with the `Runners, rounded out the CSUB scoring four with an 87. Sophomore Macey Mills was one stroke back of Scheidt with an 88 in the first round.

Round 2

All four `Runners improved by at least once stroke in the second round with Scheidt (80) and Mills (80) lowering their scores by seven and eight strokes, respectively. CSUB's women finished in the same order in Round 2 with Peers, a native of Grand Island, Neb., leading the way with a 75. Lee was one stroke back at 76.

Stewart's 79 in the second round helped CSUB come into the clubhouse with a total score of 310 (+26), 14 strokes improved from the team's first-round total. The `Runners finished the day at 634 strokes, 12 strokes behind 11th place North Dakota. Peers' 153 (+11) is tied for 31st overall among 71 student-athletes. Stewart, a native of Bakersfield, posted six birdies and was tied for the fifth-most on Day 1.

On Tuesday, the `Runners will conclude the Hobble Creek Fall Classic with one final round of golf. Tee times were pushed back to 8:30 a.m. (MT) at the greenskeeper's request. Play will begin with a shotgun start at the Hobble Creek Golf Course.
