FOLSOM, Calif.—The CSU Bakersfield beach volleyball team split a pair of matches Saturday at Livermore Community Park
CSUB defeated Sacramento State 3-2 in the morning session. The dual was tied after the first flight as The Hornets took the match at No. 5 while the 'Runner No. 4 pair of Amanda Schoene and Kortney Freeland won in straight sets.
The Hornets (0-14) took a 2-1 lead after winning the No. 3 match. Edithza Urias and Jocelyn Rodriguez tied the match at No. 2, coming from behind to defeat Lauren Aikels and Morgan Stanley in three sets (17-21, 21-12, 15-11). The Roadrunners secured the victory at No. 1 when Sydney Haynes and Carol Grasso also rallied from a 1-0 deficit to win in three sets (17-21, 21-16, 15-13).
The Roadrunners dropped a 5-0 decision to Washington (1-1) in the final match. Urias and Rodriguez at No. 2 and Sophie Flemion and Kelsee Sawyer at No. 3 both went to three sets before falling to their Huskies' counterparts.
CSUB (3-12) will play their final home match next Saturday when the Roadrunners face Bakersfield College in an exhibition beginning at 10 a.m.
The CSUB Student Recreation Center was opened in 2009 and is the center of student interaction and wellness at CSU Bakersfield. The $24 million facility houses over 75,000 square feet of both exercise equipment and other spaces for fitness, education and recreation for CSUB students, faculty and staff. In 2012, the SRC, CSUB Athletics, along with donors Steve and Lori Barnes partnered to build the sand courts, home of 'Runners Beach Volleyball and a place for students & community members to participate in this emerging and exciting sport.
