BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—The University of San Francisco defeated CSU Bakersfield 4-1 in beach volleyball action Thursday night.
The Dons, ranked 13th in the Dig Magazine Poll, earned a straight sets victory at No. 4. At No. 5, the CSUB pair of Ally Barber and Kayla Tinker dropped the first set to Jessica Keenan and Kim Guiterrez 21-8 before tying the match with a 21-18 second set victory. The Dons' duo took the third set by a 15-8 count to give USF a 2-0 lead.
The Roadrunners got on the board at No. 1 where Sydney Haynes and Carol Grasso earned their team leading eighth victory of the season in straight sets. USF (13-2) clinched the dual at No. 2. Katarina Pilepvic and Jurja Viasci dropped the first set to Edithza Urias and Jocelyn Rodriguez 21-18 before winning 21-12 to send the match to the deciding set three. In the final set the Dons defeated the 'Runners 15-7. San Francisco's Emily Reed and Courtney Sabahi posted a three-set victory (21-15, 21-23, 15-6) against Sophie Flemion and Kelsee Sawyer at No. 3.
CSUB won the exhibition match at No. 6. The Roadrunners' Lisa Armendariz and Katie Dunbar-Lowe earned a three-set triumph over Kellie Hirotsu and Dane Miller.
The Roadrunners (2-11) travel to Folsom for a pair of duals against Sacramento State and Washington Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.
The CSUB Student Recreation Center was opened in 2009 and is the center of student interaction and wellness at CSU Bakersfield. The $24 million facility houses over 75,000 square feet of both exercise equipment and other spaces for fitness, education and recreation for CSUB students, faculty and staff. In 2012, the SRC, CSUB Athletics, along with donors Steve and Lori Barnes partnered to build the sand courts, home of 'Runners Beach Volleyball and a place for students & community members to participate in this emerging and exciting sport.
