BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—CSU Bakersfield defeated Bakersfield College 5-0 in an exhibition beach volleyball dual Saturday morning on the courts of the Barnes Beach Volleyball Complex.
The Roadrunners took a 2-0 after the first flight. The No. 5 pair of Ali Sikes and McKenna Baameur in straight sets. At No. 4, the CSUB duo of Amanda Schoene and Kortney Freeland won the first set by a 21-7 count against Kayla Romero and Brea Lidgett before the Renegades' team took the second set 23-21. Schoene and Freeland would take the third set 15-8.
The Roadrunners completed the sweep in the second flight. The Roadrunner No. 3 pair of Sophie Flemion and Kelsee Sawyer clinched the dual for the 'Runners with a straight sets victory. At No. 2 Edithza Urias and Jocelyn Rodriguez swept before Sydney Haynes and Carol Grasso, the CSUB No. 1 duo, won 21-10, 21-12 against Alyssa Matthews and Sarah Aurin.
CSU Bakersfield (3-12) closes the regular season next Saturday at Cal Poly, beginning at 2 p.m.
The CSUB Student Recreation Center was opened in 2009 and is the center of student interaction and wellness at CSU Bakersfield. The $24 million facility houses over 75,000 square feet of both exercise equipment and other spaces for fitness, education and recreation for CSUB students, faculty and staff. In 2012, the SRC, CSUB Athletics, along with donors Steve and Lori Barnes partnered to build the sand courts, home of 'Runners Beach Volleyball and a place for students & community members to participate in this emerging and exciting sport.
