BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—The CSU Bakersfield beach volleyball team split two matches at home on Saturday.
The Roadrunners lost the opener 5-0 to Grand Canyon. The Antelopes won all five matches in straight sets including at No. 1 where Mackenzie Phelps and Shannon Dugan handed the Roadrunners' Sydney Haynes and Carol Grasso their first loss of the season (21-19, 21-12).
CSU Bakersfield rallied from 2-1 down to defeat CSUN 3-2 in the second match. The Matadors picked up victories at No. 4 and No. 5 before Kayla Tinker and Kelsee Sawyer defeated Erin Indermill and Stephanie Serna in straight sets.
The Roadrunner No. 2 duo of Edithza Urias and Jocelyn Rodriguez tied the dual with a three-set victory over Maddie Leiphardt and Julie Haake. The CSUB no. 1 pair of Sydney Haynes and Carol Grasso earned the team victory for the Roadrunners with a straight sets win (22-20, 21-12) over Katie Sato and Lauren Conati.
"I am proud of how hard our team worked together today to get a solid win," said CSUB head coach Olivia Simko. "CSUN is a great program with athletic players and I'm proud of the focus and determination that we had today."
CSUB (2-4) travels to the University of Arizona Wildcat Spring Challenge Mar. 25-26. The Roadrunner match against the host Wildcats will be televised on the Pac 12 Networks next Friday at 2 p.m.
The CSUB Student Recreation Center was opened in 2009 and is the center of student interaction and wellness at CSU Bakersfield. The $24 million facility houses over 75,000 square feet of both exercise equipment and other spaces for fitness, education and recreation for CSUB students, faculty and staff. In 2012, the SRC, CSUB Athletics, along with donors Steve and Lori Barnes partnered to build the sand courts, home of 'Runners Beach Volleyball and a place for students & community members to participate in this emerging and exciting sport.
