'Runners Finish 3rd In First Round of Drake Invite

MONTEREY BAY, Calif.-- The CSU Bakersfield women's golf team started the Drake Monterey Bay Invitational on Sunday afternoon. The 'Runners came in third place of six teams, just five strokes behind second-place and fellow WAC member Seattle U.

“The golf course played tough today,” said Meghan Thomason, Bakersfield's Interim Director of Golf. “We made some mental mistakes. We still have 36 holes ahead of us to make it up.”

The leading scorer of the round for Bakersfield once again was Julia Stewart (Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield Christian HS). The freshman has come on strong recently and posted a team-low 81 (+9) on the first 18 holes of the 54-hole tournament.

Senior Jordanne Barr (Bakersfield, Calif., Frontier HS) came into the clubhouse second for the Roadrunners at 82. The next two 'Runners each posted scores of 84 while CSUB finished at 331 (+43), good enough for third place.

Towson leads the overall team standings after Round 1 with a score of 318. Seattle U is in second with 326 while Bakersfield is close behind at 331. Amanda Beyke of Seattle U, who happens to be playing as an individual, posted the low score of the first round at 75.

CSUB will return to the Rancho Canada Golf Club for 18 more holes on Monday before closing the tournament with a final round on Tusday. A full recap and results will be available tomorrow night.
