SANTEE, Calif.-- The CSU Bakersfield men's golf team began its spring season on Monday with two rounds at the Carlton Oaks WIU Invitational. On the first day, the 'Runners struggled through windy conditions to finish the day in fifth place of six teams.
Round One
The 'Runners finished the first round of play fifth in the six-team field. Freshman Nathan Green (Green River, Wyo., Green River HS) posted the lowest score of the round for CSUB with a four-under 76, the sixth lowest score of the round for all players. Travis Millwee (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield College) was close behind Green with a 76 as the team's scoring four posted a total of 320 (+32).
Brett Wilson of fellow WAC-member Grand Canyon and Adrian Halimi of DePaul posted the lowest scores of the round at an even 72. DePaul led the team scores with a 295 in the first round while CSUB leads Drake by just two strokes.
Round Two
The 'Runners posted oddly similar scores across the board in the second round as Green again led CSUB with his second 76 of the day. The total was good enough to tie the freshman for third-best total score on the first day. Green and his teammates again posted an overall score of 320 and their 640 total kept them in fifth place. Brett Kettler (R-So., Bakersfield, Calif., Liberty HS) also posted identical scores, shooting 80 in both of the first two rounds and he has the second lowest total for CSUB (160, +16).
Butler shot the low round with a team score of 303 to boost them into second place while DePaul hung onto a four-stroke lead overall. Joey Arcuri of Butler posted the lowest second round score with a two-over 74 as wind caused problems for all individuals. The 'Runners now lead Drake by six strokes.
“Nathan Green played very tough and showed tremendous heart,” said Greg Osbourne, CSUB's Director of Golf. “He never gave up despite the horrible conditions. 76 and 76 puts him in third. As a team, we should improve on the last 18 holes.”
CSUB will return for the final round of the 54-hole tournament Tuesday morning.
