LAS VEGAS, Nev.-- The Bakersfield men's golf team concluded its season with the third and final round of the WAC Championship on Sunday morning as Dylan Lym (Jr., Evanston, Wyo., Evanston HS) led the team to an eighth-place finish.
The 'Runners entered the final round trailing Chicago State by 12 strokes and were within only one stroke with three holes to go. The 17th and 18th holes that plagued the student-athletes all weekend got the best of the 'Runners and prevented the comeback (307-312-331-950). "We were fantastic today," said Bakersfield's Director of Golf, Greg Osbourne. "I thought we came all the way back and we thought we beat Chicago State. It was very tough conditions and it just goes to show you every single hole of 18 means something."
Lym came into Day 3 tied for 29th in the individual standings. The junior from Wyoming posted a strong Round 3 of three over par to finish 23rd in the standings (72-80-75, +11). "Dylan fought the entire time," Osborne said. "He showed so much integrity coming down to the end and he really came through."
Bakersfield's second strongest finisher was Matthew Deford (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield College), who was Bakersfield's most consistent golfer on the weekend (78-76-79, +17). Jin Park (RJr., Burbank, Calif., Glendale CC) (77-83-87, +31) and Izzad Ibrahim (Fr., Kajang, Selangor, Malaysia, Smk Jalan Empat.) (80-78-90, +32) finished three strokes apart on the day and one stroke apart for the tournament. Nicholas Browning (So., Bakersfield, Calif., Independence HS) (86-78-91, +39) rounded out the Bakersfield golfers. "The five guys that went gave every bit of what they can do," said Osborne of his squad of golfers. "They did every single thing that they could possibly do and they didn't quit."
New Mexico State claimed the 2014 WAC title behind the overall individual leader, Pat Beyhan of New Mexico State (67-71-72, -6). Click this link for full results from the WAC Men's Golf Championship.
