BAKERSFIELD, Calif.-In a dual in which both teams won five matches, bonus points proved to be the difference at Arizona State (6-10, 2-2 Pac 12) defeated CSU Bakersfield (2-6, 0-5 Pac 12) 24-17 in a league dual Sunday afternoon at the Icardo Center.
All five Sun Devils victories came win bonus points including pins by Levi Cooper at heavyweight and Nathan Hoffer at 141. Eric Starks (174), Kevin Radford (184), and Kyle McIntosh (149) won their matches by major decision. Winning in their final home dual for the Roadrunners were seniors Frank Lomas (R-Sr., 133, Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield HS) and Anthony Box (R-Sr., 157, Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield HS).
A pair of true freshman for CSUB, AC Brown (197, Oakdale, Calif., Oakdale HS) and Adam Fierro (Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield HS) were victorius for the Roadrunners. Redshirt junior Tyler Iwamura (125, San Diego, Calif., Santa Fe Christian HS) also picked up a victory for CSU Bakersfield.
“Its disappointing to win half the matches, but end up taking the loss,” said CSUB head coach Mike Mendoza. “I thought we struggled even in our victories. I think our guys will have a lot to take from (this afternoon).
The Roadrunners travel to San Francisco State for a dual Feb. 3 and the California Collegiate Open Feb. 4 which will be hosted by the Gators.
