Garcia Claims Individual Title; CSUB Ties for Fourth in Utah

LAYTON, Utah - CSUB junior men's golfer Levi Garcia shot a final round 64 (–8) to claim the Purple and Red Invitational individual title Tuesday at the Valley View Golf Course in Layton, Utah. As a team, the Roadrunners shot a third round 286, a four stroke improvement from their second round and a 12 stroke improvement from their first round. The team moved up seven spots in the standings between the second and third rounds to finish in a tie for fourth. The University of Utah won the event with a combined 867. CSUB was just seven strokes back with a three–round total of 874.

Garcia, a transfer from Allan Hancock College, opened the day in a tie for 14th at +1. An eight birdie effort catapulted the Paso Robles, Calif., native into the lead, overtaking second round leader Jake Johnson of Sacramento State by two strokes when the day ended. The round of 64 was the lowest round a CSUB golfer has shot since Kevin Kelbe carded a 64 back on March 31, 2000 at the Family Motors Invitational at Seven Oaks Country Club in Bakersfield. Kelbe also won his tournament, finishing at –9.

“We were battling really windy conditions out there,” Head Coach Dave Barber said. “Levi played a great round and to have an individual win an event in our first tournament is a great start to our season.”

Junior James Moseley tied for 10th after a final round 73 (+1). He was tied with Garcia after round two. Daniel Petta matched Moseley's third round 73 to finish in a tie for 36th.

“I was very pleased with our entire team's effort,” said Barber. “We know what we have to work on for next week but today's finish will really be a positive moving forward.”

CSUB will head to the Coast BMW Tournament on October 5–6. The event is hosted by Cal Poly and will be played at Monarch Dunes Country Club.
