SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. ? Brandon Zoetewey earned top individual honors in the 125-pound division and Joey Granata earned the Coach Haddad Award for most pins Saturday at the California Collegiates wrestling tournament hosted by San Francisco State.
The Roadrunners had seven total placewinners in the individual open meet including Zoetewey, Frank Lomas (125) with a second place finish, Justin Durham (133) in third, Granata (165) in third, Ernesto Ancona (174), Riley Orozco (184) in second and David Morgan (HWT) in third.
Zoetewey won his first bout by fall, won his second with a 17-0 technical fall and pinned Cal Baptist's Samuel Fragoza to reach the championship match, where he earned a forfeit win over fellow ?Runner Lomas.
Lomas took a similar path to the title match, claiming a 19-3 win over San Francisco State's Pierre Bondoc, pinning unattached Luis Mercado and earning a 7-2 decision over Cal State Fullerton's Marcus Orona.
At 133, Durham won his first two matches by technical fall and major decision before dropping a 7-3 decision to unattached Justin Paulsen. In the consolation bracket, Durham topped Chadron State's Ryan Zavala 7-6, earned a forfeit win and an injury default to reach the third place match where he fell to Paulsen for a second time.
At 165, Granata improved his matches-won-by-fall record to 13-0 by pinning five of six opponents on his way to a third place finish.
At 184, Orozco pinned Cal State Fullerton's David Moore, decisioned unattached Ty Vinson and majored San Francisco State's Marques Gales to reach the title bout. There he put up a fight, but fell in a tight 3-2 decision to unattached Enock Francois.
In the heavyweight division, Morgan opened the day with a pair of wins, then fell 3-1 in overtime to unattached Matt Gibson. Morgan battled back in the consolation bracket, earning a 6-1 decision over Portland State's Nick Gale and a 3-2 overtime decision over Chadron State's Shaine Odell.
“Overall it was a good day of wrestling,” said CSUB Assistant Head Coach Mike Mendoza. “Zoetewey looked really good and we had a lot of guys, especially younger guys, wrestle really well.”
Bakersfield returns to the Icardo Center Sunday to host Oregon State in a Pac-10 dual beginning at 2 p.m.
