BAKERSFIELD, Calif. ? CSUB freshman Mike Flynn shot 77 Tuesday, good enough to help him hang on for a sixth?place finish at the OGIO Pacific Coast Intercollegiate on the Rancho San Marcos Golf Course in Santa Barbara.
Flynn fell back two spots after entering the third round fourth at five?under 139. It hardly mattered as Boise State's Troy Merritt destroyed the course Tuesday, firing a nine?under 65 to finish the 54?hole event at 17?under 199. He out?paced runner?up Nick Delio of Cal State Northridge by eight strokes to take medalist honors.
Flynn's effort helped the Roadrunners place sixth in the 12?team field at 893. Northridge took the team title at nine?under 855. Cal Poly and Boise tied for a distant second place at 875. Host UC Santa Barbara (887) and Loyola Marymount (888) completed the top half of the field with CSUB.
“We were the first group off the first team this morning and the conditions were cold and difficult for those of us going off early,” said CSUB Head Coach Dave Barber. “We were playing our sixth round in six days, which made things more difficult, but we did not play with much consistency at this tournament.”
Nick Baratelle carded CSUB's low round Tuesday with a 73. Adam Frey shot 74 while Bryan Hogan closed out the CSUB scoring with a 77.
The 'Runners will close their 2007?08 schedule next week when they play at the Stevinson Ranch Invitational hosted by the University of Colorado.
