ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. ? Freshman Mike Flynn earned a 10th place finish to help the CSUB men's golf team finish sixth in a 14?team field at the Cal Poly Intercollegiate Friday at the Cypress Ridge Golf Course in Arroyo Grande.
Flynn finished at five?over 221 for the 54?hole tournament, placing him eight strokes behind Cal Poly's Brycen Wagner and British Columbia's Cory Renfrew. Wagner earned medalist honors, winning a playoff by default as Renfrew and his UBC teammates had left to due to travel arrangements before the final scores were posted.
Wagner's efforts helped the host Mustangs defend their team title at seven?over 871. Fellow Big West member Cal State Northridge placed second at 882. Bakersfield finished at 901.
While Flynn led the 'Runners overall, junior Adam Frey tied Renfrew for the low round of the day ? and of the entire tournament ? with a three?under 69 Friday. It was one of only three sub?70 rounds carded in the entire tournament.
“The conditions were cold and very windy all three rounds and not conducive to low scores at all,” said CSUB Head Coach Dave Barber. “Adam's round today was all the more remarkable because of how difficult the conditions were today.”
CSUB will stay on the coast to play its next tournament, heading down the 101 Freeway to play at the OGIO Pacific Coast Intercollegiate beginning Monday in Santa Barbara.
