BAKERSFIELD, Calif. ? The Fresno State men's golf team came back to Earth, but the Bulldogs' pedestrian round of three?over 291 was still good enough to win the 2008 Elco, Inc. Intercollegiate men's golf title in record fashion Tuesday at Bakersfield Country Club.
Fresno finished the 54?hole event at 18?under 846. That was two strokes better than the University of Hawaii?Hilo's record of 848 set in 2005. Host CSUB recorded Tuesday's second best round at 293 to finish in second place at 869. Pepperdine (875), Chico State (881) and Point Loma Nazarene (883) completed the top five.
The Bulldog assault on the record book didn't stop at the team level. Michael Gideon became the first player ever to score in the 60's all three rounds, finishing at a tournament?record 10?under 206. He shattered the record of five?under set by Hilo's Colin Gilliam in 2005.
Gideon's teammate and Stockdale High School product Grant Doverspike was the bridesmaid for the second consecutive year, this time finishing at four?under 212. Brad Wyatt completed the FSU sweep of the top three spots at 213.
CSUB's Brady Baguio was the only other player to break par for the tournament, surviving a 76 Tuesday to finish at one?under 215.
Chico State was the top non?Division I finisher at 881. The Wildcats held off Point Loma Nazarene University by two strokes. Defending overall Elco champion Sam Cyr was the top finisher in that group, tying teammate Brandan Kelley at even par 21.
