FRESNO, Calif. ? The CSUB men's golf team recorded the third?best round of the day, moving up six spots to finish sixth at the Fresno State Lexus Golf Classic Tuesday at Fort Washington Country Club in Fresno.
Bakersfield's four?under 284 trailed only Cal (279) and Pacific (282) Tuesday. San Diego State, the 36?hole leader, went one?over 289, but had such a commanding lead that it still held off Texas and Cal by three strokes to win the team title.
The Roadrunners entered Tuesday's final round in 12th place. They hovered around 10th place most of the day before catching fire late, thanks mostly to the play of freshman Bryan Hogan. Hogan played the back nine at four?under 32. He birdied the final three holes to help CSUB (863) slip past Boise State (864) and Loyola Marymount (865).
“We played very sold and finished strong in the most difficult conditions of the tournament,” said CSUB Head Coach Dave Barber. “After the way we finished (Monday) I told them I wanted to see some red numbers today and they delivered.”
Hogan delivered the lowest red number, carding five birdies and an eagle as part of his round of 68. Only Jason D'Amore of LMU finished better with a 67 Tuesday. Hogan's round moved him from 37th place into a tie for 15th on the final leaderboard at three?under 213.
Sophomore Brady Baguio shot two?under 70 to move up 10 spots to a 27th place finish. Freshman Mike Flynn also finished in the top half of the field, shooting even?par 72 Tuesday to finish tied for 52nd.
San Diego State's Matt Hoffenberg and Charlie Holland of Texas tied for first place at nine?under 207. Holland earned medalist honors on the third playoff hole.
The Roadrunners return to action next Monday and Tuesday when the host the Elco, Inc. Intercollegiate at Bakersfield Country Club.
