BAKERSFIELD, Calif. ? CSUB's men's swim team started and ended its final regular-season meet with strong second-place relay finishes to highlight a solid performance against the No. 3 Pac-10 ranked Stanford Friday at the Hillman Aquatics Center.
The Cardinal's “B” team won the opening race, the 200 yard medley relay, in a time of 1:30.78. CSUB's “A” squad of Luka Leskur, T.J. Whitacker, Rene Hjorth and Filip Zemier was second in a time of 1:34.26, narrowly edging out Stanford's “A” team, which finished in a time of 1:34.68.
Leskur had a pair of runner up finishes in individual races, placing second in the 100 yard backstroke (51.91) and in the 200 yard backstroke (1:56.56). Justin Burdine nearly matched his season-best time in the 50 yard freestyle, placing second with a mark of 21.82.
Six Roadrunners set season-best times including Sampo Sissala with a 47.68 fourth place finish in the 100 yard freestyle, Nathan Vizcarra with a 9:47.73 finish in the 1000 yard freestyle, Hjorth with a 50.90 third place time in the 100 yard butterfly, Brian Lencioni with a 56.97 mark in the 100 yard backstroke and Whitacker with a 59.34 fourth place finish in the 100 yard breaststroke. Also, Eric Torres had a pair of season-best marks with a 1:08.41 mark in the 100 yard breaststroke and a 57.17 mark in the 100 yard butterfly.
CSUB closed out the meet with a solid second place finish in the 200 yard freestyle relay (1:26.08), edging Stanford's “B” squad by .3 seconds.
The Cardinal earned the fastest marks in all 16 events, but competed the final five events as exhibition to claim a final team score of 166-115 over the ?Runners.
The ?Runners will spend the remainder of the month gearing up for the Conference USA Championships held in Houston from Feb. 27 through March 1.
