Davis, Calif. ? For the second consecutive week, the CSUB softball team beat a giant?killer. Friday at the opening day of the UC Davis Aggie Invitational, the Roadrunners upended Providence College 4?0 in five innings to conclude day one.
In earlier play, CSUB fell to 2008 Olympic qualifier The Netherlands 6?4 in an exhibition game.
Providence proved its mettle by upending No. 21 Georgia last week, just as Bradley had defeated Pac?10 power Oregon prior to meeting CSUB last weekend. In both case, Roadrunner freshman pitcher Brittany Johnson was more than equal to the task.
Johnson scattered three hits over five innings before the game was halted due to rain in the bottom of the fifth inning. By that time, the potent Roadrunner offense had provided Johnson more than enough support to earn her fifth win of the season.
A Hilary Taylor squeeze bunt and a Stefanie Frei sacrifice fly plated a pair of runs in the fourth inning. In the fifth, Pikake Nutter-Gaudet tripled home Bethany Snow after a leadoff single. Kelli Bailey singled up the middle to drive home Nutter-Gaudet before the game was called.
In the opener, CSUB out?hit The Netherlands 12-8, but couldn't stop the bleeding as the Dutch scored three in the second before pushing across single runs in the next three innings. Trailing 6?2, the 'Runners rallied for two in the top of the seventh and brought the tying run to the plate before falling.
Snow led the CSUB offense by going 5-for-6 Friday, including a 3-for-3 effort against The Netherlands.
The 'Runners (6?4 overall) continue play at the Aggie Invitational with a single game against host UC Davis Saturday morning at 9 a.m. The Aggie Invitational concludes Sunday.
