LONG BEACH, Calif. - Freshman sprinter Rachel McCall nearly cracked the CSUB top five list in the 50 free and the rest of the Roadrunner women's swim team turned in a solid opening day performance at the 2008 UCI/Nike Cup Thursday in Long Beach.
McCall, a freshman from Calgary, Canada, swam a 24.54 in the prelims, then turned in a 24.22, 17th place finish in the finals of the 50 free, a mark that is just .18 seconds off the Roadrunners' all-time top five list.
The 200 free relay team of McCall, Tessa Brown, Jennifer King and Leah Felber started the day with a 1:39.71, 13th place finish, a time two seconds faster than their previous season-best.
The 400 medley relay team also trimmed its season-best time as Stephanie Donnelly, McCall, Lexie Kelly and Brown combined to cut seven seconds and place 14th with a time of 4:05.05.
In other indivudual events, Felber cut nearly 11 seconds off her season-best in the 500 free, swimming a 5:16.59 in the morning prelims.
"We had a great day, swimming season-bests all day long," said CSUB Head Coach Pat Skehan. "Every swim was great and Rachel did a real nice job on the 50 free."
