BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The UCLA men's golf team set a first–round record while racing to a commanding lead after 36 holes of the Cal State Bakersfield Poor Boy Invitational Monday at Seven Oaks country Club in Bakersfield.
UCLA's first round of 17–under–par 271 smashed the previous mark of 275 set by Cal Poly in 2003 and host CSUB in 2000. The Bruins shot a more pedestrian eight–under 280 in the afternoon to grab an 18–stroke lead over Bakersfield heading into Tuesday's final 18 holes. UCLA sits at 25–under 551 while the Roadrunners are at seven–under 569.
Cal State San Bernardino is third at four–under 572. UC San Diego (573), Grand Canyon and Sonoma State (574) round out the top six.
UCLA sophomore Lucas Lee broke the tournament first–round record with a 65 Monday, just one stroke off Kevin Klebe's tournament record, and followed that with a 67 in the afternoon to take a two–stroke lead into the clubhouse through 36 holes. Eric Justensen of Cal State Stanislaus shot rounds of 68 and 66 to finish at 10–under 134. Brady Baguio of Bakersfield and Kyle Hopkins of Sonoma State finished the day at eight–under 136 and sit four strokes off the pace.
Bakersfield shot one–under 287 in the morning round before catching fire in the afternoon. The Roadrunners' 282 was the best second round by any team not named UCLA.
Baguio fired a seven–under 65 in the second round to lead the 'Runner charge. Senior Chris Kwon carded rounds of 70 and 74 to tie for 22nd at even par 144.
The CSUB Poor Invitational concludes with 18 holes Tuesday at Seven Oaks Country Club.
