SIMI VALLEY, Calif. ? Freshman Mike Flynn (Oxnard HS) carded a final round 73 to lead the CSUB golf team to a ninth place finish at the Bill Cullum Invitational Tuesday at the Wood Ranch Golf Club in Simi Valley.
Flynn's round Tuesday came on the heel's of his season?best 69 Monday afternoon. It marks the sixth time in nine collegiate rounds Flynn has shot 73 or better. He placed 16th overall in the 90?golfer field.
Thanks in large part to his efforts, the Roadrunners placed ninth of 15 teams. Bakersfield shot 307 Tuesday, with scores creeping up across the board as they had in Monday's morning round. The 'Runners finished at 906 for the tournament.
“This was just the third collegiate tournament for every player on our roster and they haven't quite learned how to start strong yet,” said CSUB Head Coach Dave Barber. “We struggled early today mentally. On a course like Wood Ranch, if you have a lapse of concentration it will punish you and we learned that lesson today.”
UC Santa Barbara shot eight?over 296 but held onto its 36?hole lead to win going away at six?over 870. The University of Portland recorded the low team round of the day at 292 to leapfrog past Loyola Marymount into second place at 881. LMU, which shot 301 Tuesday, finished third at 886.
UCSB's Brian Hollenbeck, the 36?hole leader, fired a two?under 70 to pass teammate Michael Casca and Southern Utah's Eric Nilsson for the individual title at four?under 212. Nilsson also shot 70 as only five golfers managed to break par Tuesday.
In addition to Flynn's 16th?place finish, CSUB freshman Bryan Hogan (Stockdale HS) shot 84 but still managed a top?20 finish at 224.
Tuesday's round concluded the fall portion of the 2007?08 CSUB men's golf schedule. The 'Runners will return to action Feb. 6 when they open play at the Hawaii?Hilo Tournament.
