BAKERSFIELD, Calif.. — Cal State Bakersfield's men's and women's swim teams opened the home portion of their 2006-07 schedule with wins on Saturday as both teams knocked off UC Santa Cruz at the John S. Hillman Aquatic Center.
San Jose State also competed on the women's side and the Spartans edged the Roadrunners by a 188-160 score. Bakersfield's women crushed UCSC 228-128, while the Roadrunner men just got past the Banana Slugs, 180-168.
Bakersfield's men showed great improvement in the meet and won 10 of the 16 events contested on the cold winter Bakersfield afternoon. Freshman Adam Pawlowski won the 1,000 freestyle in a season- and team-best 9:48.29, and followed with a win in the 500 free in 4:47.36.
Sophomore Alexey Belyy was also a double winner, taking the 200 butterfly in a season-best 1:59.54 while becoming the first Roadrunner to break two minutes in that event this season. He also won the 200 individual medley, also in a season-best 1:57.52.
Senior Piotr Gegotek was the sprint champion on the day, winning both the 50 free (21.51) and the 100 free (season-best 46.72), while Justin Burdine-Ortega also had a season-best time in winning the 100 butterfly in 54.36. Evan Crocker took the 1-meter diving competition at 243.95, and both relays also reached wins with the team of Nathan Vizcarra, Belyy, Gegotek and Filip Zemier won the 200 medley relay in 1:38.10, while the team of Gegotek, Burdine-Ortega, Vizcarra and Zemier won the 200 free relay in 1:26.92.
For the Slugs, Kenton Drake was the lone two-event winning, taking the 100 breaststroke in 58.30, as well as the 200 breaststoke in 2:07.22.
Overall, the Roadrunner men had 19 season-best times.
In the women's competition, San Jose State used first-place scoring to earn the team win. The Spartans won 11 of the 16 events contested, as well as 11 of 14 swimming events. The Roadrunner women won four events — including both diving events — and UCSC won one event.
Bakersfield's lone solo swimming event that was won came from Amy Mitchell in the 100 breaststroke at 1:09.35, while freshman Melanie Sloan won both diving events, taking the 1-meter at 237.05 and well as the 3-meter in 210.70.
Bakersfield finished the meet with a win in the 200 freestyle relay as the time of Kerry Cunnion, Joelle Johnson, Jennifer Ward and Simoné Swanepoel easily won the relay in a season-best time of 1:33.40.
SJSU's Lauren Mar won three events for the Spartans, taking the 200 free (1:57.33), the 50 free (24.56) and completed the 50-100-200 sweep with a win in the 100 free (53.10). The Spartans' Amanda Carr won two events, taking the 1,000 freestyle (10:34.05) and the 500 freestyle (5:11.78).
UCSC's lone win came from Erin Hunter, taking the 200 breaststroke in 2:27.79.
The Roadrunner men and women return to the Hillman Aquatics Center next Saturday when they host the University of the Pacific at 1 p.m.
