'Runners Still Second At Midway Point Of NCAA Championships

DANIELS, W.Va. ? The Cal State Bakersfield golf team continued to keep pace, once again firing an eight-over 288 to remain in second place Wednesday at the 2006 NCAA Division II National Championships at The Resort at Glade Springs in Daniels, West Virginia.

The Roadrunners continued their solid play with the second best round of the day. The University of South Carolina-Aiken, the tournament leaders, took home the best round with a seven?over 287 to extend its lead over the 'Runners by one to four strokes overall.

Bakersfield remains within striking distance of the leaders much to the delight of CSUB Head Coach Dave Barber.

Senior D.J. Fernando (Garces HS) continued his strong play with a two?over par 72 to finished tied for sixth at two?over. Freshman Chris Killmer (Bellingham, Wash./Bellingham HS) carded the best round of the day for Bakersfield with an even?par 70 to move into 10th place overall at three?over.

Senior Cody Slover (Bakersfield/College of the Sequoias) continued to prove a worthy choice in the fifth slot with a one?over 71 in the second day to move into 15th place overall at three?over. Freshman Tyler Hurst (Stockdale HS) is in 31st at eight?over. Rounding out the squad was freshman Brody Baguio (Highland HS), who struggled on the back nine to finish at seven?over on the day.

Columbus State and Florida Southern, the two teams tied with Bakersfield for second after the first round, suffered through tough days. Columbus fired an 11?over to drop into third place at 19?over 579 while Florida Southern carded a 17?over to move to fifth at 585.

South Carolina?Aiken's Dane Burkhart fired an even?par 70 to move into a first place tie with Florida Southern's Greg Koch, the first round leader. The pair are at three?under at the halfway point. Jamie Arnoretti of St. Mary's moved into third at one?under.

The Roadrunners are making their seventh tournament appearance in the nine-year history of the program. Their best finish came in 2000 when they took second overall.

The four?round NCAA Division II championship tournament continues Wednesday with CSUB teeing off at 12:50 p.m. Eastern Time.
