Fernando Buzzes Field At Buzzini Invitational

April 11, 2006

TURLOCK, Calif. - Cal State Bakersfield senior D.J. Fernando put a nice cap on his regular season collegiate career by winning individual medalist honors at the Buzzini Invitational at the Turlock Country Club Tuesday afternoon in Turlock.

It was the third tournament win of the season for Fernando. He earlier captured titles at the Grand Canyon Fall Invitational and Nova Southeastern Spring Classic.

Tuesday's win also marks the third consecutive tournament in which a Roadrunner has won the individual championship. Freshman Chris Killmer took top honors at last week's Sonoma State Invitiational and Fernando won at Nova Southeastern the week before that.

Playing through cold, windy conditions, Fernando carded a 75 Tuesday to finish the tournament at even par 216. That proved one stroke better than the Cal State Stanislaus duo of Ryan Thornberry and Matt Hollinsead. Sam Cyr (218) of Point Loma Nazarene University and Dean Henry (219) of Notre Dame de Namur rounded out the top five.

As a team, the No. 2 ranked Roadrunners shot 306 Tuesday to earn a second-place finish in the 19-team field. Bakersfield finished 18 strokes behind host and No. 6 ranked Stanislaus at 878. California Collegiate Athletic Association rivals Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State San Bernardino tied for third place at 905.

“We scored very well considering the conditions,” said CSUB Head Coach Dave Barber. “They measured the winds at upwards of 30 miles per hour, it was a minor miracle that anybody could post low number today.”

The miracle worker proved to be Nicholas Larson of Montana State-Billings, who was the only player in the 99-golfer field to break par Tuesday, shooting two-under 70. Roadrunner senior Cody Slover was one of only three players to go as low as 73 in the final round. Slover finished in 24th place at 11-over 227.

Next up for the Roadrunners is the 2006 CCAA Championship Tournament at Hunter Ranch Golf Club in Paso Robles. CSUB is the four-time defending champion. The Roadrunners are looking to become just the second team ever to win five consecutive CCAA golf titles and the first since Fresno State captured the last of its six straight championships in 1960.
