CSUB wrestler Bryce Hammond (R-Fr., Bakersfield, Calif.,
Bakersfield HS) has been selected as CSUB's Student Athlete of the Week for the
week of March 4. Hammond is 33-8 for the 'Runners this season.
Hammond joins fellow wrestler Tyler Iwamura
(R-Sr., San Diego, Calif., Santa Fe Christian HS) as the only two CSUB
wrestlers to be crowned champions at the Pac-12 tournament this past week in
Tempe, Ariz. Hammond was 3-0 in
tournament action and defeated the No. 1 seed Blake Stauffer 9-4 in the finals
for the 174-pound weight class.
Hammond has been wrestling for the past 12 years and has had
many successes in Bakersfield prior to his start at CSUB. Having wrestled for Bakersfield High School,
Hammond was named Bakersfield Californian All Area Wrestler both in 2010 and
2011.
When asked about his mental preparation for the Pac-12
tournament Hammond states it was no different then the mentality he takes to
the mat every match.
“I have to wrestle my style and be ready to battle and
fight. It was the same thing in the Pac-12 Tournament.”
Hammond isn't settling on just being the Pac-12 champion. He
is looking for more success.
“It was great to win, but I'm not satisfied. I still want to
win a national title.”
Hammond is an agricultural business major at CSUB and hopes
to pursue a career in ranching after getting his degree.
