'Runners Set To Compete At Ben Brown Invitational

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - After an impressive season-opening performance last weekend at the Cal Poly Pomona Preview Meet, the CSU Bakersfield men's and women's track and field teams will be back in action at the Ben Brown Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

The meet, hosted by Cal State Fullerton, will hold the hammer throw on Friday starting at 10 a.m., while all other events are slated for Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.

The 'Runners started the season with a bang at the Pomona Preview by claiming three individual titles. Defending 2012 Great West Conference hammer champion Thomas Judge (Sr., Bakersfield, Calif., Garces HS) posted a personal-best mark of 187-06 feet to win the hammer. His throw ranks him at No. 17 in CSUB's all-time record book. Gabe Holland (Jr., Anchorage, Alaska, University of Alaska) won the discus with a personal-best toss of 159-07. On the women's side, Courtney Parker (Sr., Bakersfield, Calif., South HS) finished in first place in the javelin with a personal-best toss of 113-05, which moved her up to No. 16 in CSUB's record book. Holland also finished third in the hammer with a personal-record throw of 174-08.

"I hope that the team can build on the momentum of last week and continue a strong kick off to the 2013 outdoor season," said CSUB head coach Marcia Mansur-Wentworth

Also looking to place high for the 'Runner men will be Richard Maestre (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., South HS) in the hurdles, Justus Mora (Jr., Sparks, Nev., Spanish Springs HS) in the sprints, Payton Stephen (R-Fr., Los Angeles, Calif., Perris HS) in the long jump, Derek Stotler (So., Vista, Calif., Rancho Buena Vista HS) in making his 3,000-meter steeplechase season debut, and Karnell Grimes (R-So., Rosamond, Calif., Rosamond HS) in the javelin.

On the women's side, Jamara Scott  (Bakersfield, Calif., Golden Valley HS) will continue her successful freshman season competing in the long jump and running on the 4x100m relay.  Parker and freshman Gabby Giuliano  (Bakersfield, Calif., Stockdale HS) will look to lead CSUB in the javlin.

On the track, the 'Runners will look to sprinters Alyssa Page (So., Santa Rosa, Calif., Montgomery HS) and Taevionna Wilson (So, Antioch, Calif., Antioch HS), who will both be running in multiple events, including relays.
